Listed as Threatened: Low Conservation Concern

Range: The Ovenbird is a long-distance migrant. Birds that breed east of the Appalachian Mountains spend their winters in Florida and the Caribbean, while those from further west migrate to Mexico and Central America.

Habitat: Ovenbirds depend on undisturbed mature broadleaf and mixed forests. They prefer dense, shaded areas where they can forage for insects on the forest floor.

Human Impact: Although Ovenbirds remain numerous, they are sensitive to forest fragmentation and disruptions from industrial noise, roadbuilding, and logging. Their populations were stable or slightly increased between 1966 and 2019, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey.

Significant Events: In October 2022, finding an Ovenbird that had struck a window sparked a personal investigation into the challenges facing avian species. This moment led to a deeper exploration of bird population declines and the lasting effects of human encroachment.
